Longhurst’s research into a series of 19th century photographic portraits of women, diagnosed as hysteric and held in various European medical institutions, is taken as a starting point for this work, which both considers and challenges the lingering legacy of such portraits through an exploration of agency, visibility, movement and performance.
Made in collaboration with an intergenerational collective of artists who all live with unseen conditions.
